New View: A Curated Visual Gallery

Twenty Magnificent Homes by California Architects

Growing up as a kid with dyslexia, Jeff Zimmerman often felt like a failure and an outsider—until he discovered drawing.

“In school, my ability to be artistic at an early age gave me a sense of success which I did not often feel as a dyslexic student,” he said. “Teachers encouraged me and directed me toward courses like industrial design and art and I found my footing, and maybe also my soul.” . . . .

House Beautiful

“It’s not always our vision, but the vision of the area that speaks to us,” designer Marshall Watson explains. For the St. Helena, California, vacation home of some longtime clients, that meant devising a modern, barn-style structure that’s truly one with its idyllic setting—and infused with plenty of wine country charm . . .

How This Bucolic Wine Country Home Evokes The Feeling Of Flying

The Russian River Valley has a way of evoking strong feelings: in the enveloping morning fog, an ethereal sense of solitude; in the golden-hour shade of a great black oak, a deep feeling of calm; and from a windswept knoll overlooking the valley floor, the sensation of flying.

The latter was architect Jeff Zimmerman’s experience when he first visited this sloping site along a bucolic wine country corridor that follows the contours of Dry Creek Valley and the Russian River . . .

Just far enough (or close enough) for privacy, the low-slung main structure (at top and below) is one of the best “couples” houses we’ve ever seen, perfect for intimacy yet big enough to entertain groups of any size. It relates perfectly to the semi-arid climate of the Sonoma Valley, with walls of glass that effortlessly disappear, blurring the line between outdoors and indoors . . .

Building a Life

BEFORE THERE WERE WALLS, a foundation, or even sketches of the form it would take, Michael Muscardini and Kate Eilertsen could envision the contemporary home where they planned to spend the rest of their lives. Shortly after the couple purchased 3-plus acres on Sonoma Mountain in 2015, Muscardini built a wooden platform on the building site, and it was there that the couple would sit for hours, taking in the unobstructed view of the Valley of the Moon and imagining the future . . .

This book illustrates how we work with a client in the design of their home, in this case a family compound in Sonoma. Our work started with site selection, working closely with their real estate agent and a general contractor we located two adjoining parcels and quickly began exploring their potential. The Mcluney Ranch Compound is made up of one home for Mom and Dad and one for their daughter, son in law, and two young grandkids. On the Sonoma Valley Floor, with sweeping views to the west, the two separate homes were to share in proximity and kinship . . .
